Mountains rising from the calm water of the Bay of Kotor in Montenegro

Montenegro

A sheltered Adriatic fjord

May – October

Montenegro’s Bay of Kotor is one of the Mediterranean’s most dramatic anchorages. Often mistaken for a fjord, it is in fact a submerged river canyon - limestone walls rising a thousand metres on either side, narrowing to just 250 metres at the Verige Strait. The water is deep, green, and astonishingly still, and the whole bay feels enclosed, protected, and quietly removed from the world.

A wellness voyage here moves slowly between the inner bays, where mountains reflect perfectly in motionless water and the loudest sound is a church bell ringing the hour. You anchor below villages of vertical stone, swim in water warmed by summer sun, and step ashore in Perast and Kotor - the latter a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1979. The sense of shelter is total; the air carries pine and salt down from the slopes of Lovćen and Orjen.

Why this destination

The Sheltered Bay

Deep, calm, green water enclosed by limestone walls. The inner bays of Risan and Kotor are among the stillest anchorages in the Mediterranean - perfect for swimming and quiet days at rest.

Mountains From the Sea

The peaks of Lovćen and Orjen rise vertically from the shoreline, holding snow into early summer. Their slopes bring cool, clean mountain air down to the water and a backdrop unlike anywhere on the coast.

Venetian Stone Towns

Kotor and tiny Perast guard the narrowest reach of the bay, watched over by the island church of Our Lady of the Rocks - built by sailors who dropped a stone on each voyage out to sea.

Mountain and Sea Table

From the village of Njeguši comes pršut, ham dry-cured in Adriatic winds at altitude. Paired with fresh fish, local cheese, and mountain produce, it is wellness cooking shaped by both sea and slope.
